A percentile is a place in a line of 100 similar measurements. If estimated fetal weight is at the 40th percentile, the estimate is larger than about 40 out of 100 measurements and smaller than about 60 out of 100 in the reference chart for that gestational age. It does not mean the baby is 40% developed, and it is not a school grade.
One point on a chart is like one frame of a movie. Clinicians also consider the pattern across time, pregnancy dating, fluid, blood-flow studies, maternal health, and the complete ultrasound—not one number copied into a web calculator.

Why Online and Clinical Results Can Differ

About charts: A reference chart describes measurements observed in a defined study population. It is not a growth target that every fetus must follow exactly. Switching charts halfway through comparison can create an apparent change even when the underlying measurement trend is similar, so use the chart named on the clinical report.
Questions for the scan appointment: Which growth standard did the report use? Was gestational age based on an early ultrasound? Are the individual measurements proportionate? How does this scan compare with the previous one? Is follow-up recommended, and if so, when? These questions are more useful than trying to label a single percentile as good or bad.
Remember that normal biological variation is wide. Parents can be tall or short, and fetal measurements also vary. Clinicians look for patterns that may need attention while avoiding conclusions from tiny differences caused by rounding or measurement uncertainty.
