Quick Answer

Body frame size is estimated from height and wrist circumference: divide height by wrist circumference. For men, ratios above 10.4 indicate a small frame and below 9.6 a large one; for women the boundaries are 11 and 10.1.

Ratio = height ÷ wrist.

Men: >10.4 small · <9.6 large.

Women: >11 small · <10.1 large.

What Is Body Frame Size?

Body frame size describes skeletal build — small, medium, or large — and it is why two people of the same height can have different healthy weight ranges.

The wrist method is the classic field technique: bone width at the wrist scales with overall frame, and the height-to-wrist ratio separates the three build categories.

02

How It Is Calculated

Frame ratio = height (cm) ÷ wrist circumference (cm)

Example: Example: 175 cm, 17 cm wrist (man) → ratio 10.3 (medium frame)

Limitations

  • Measure the wrist at the bony prominence, tape snug but not tight.
  • Frame size is one input among many — muscle and fat distribution matter more.
  • Elbow-breadth calipers are the more precise alternative.

Body Frame Size FAQ

How do I measure my body frame?

Wrap a tape around your wrist at the bone, then divide your height by the wrist circumference — the ratio gives small, medium, or large.

Why does frame size matter?

It refines ideal-weight ranges: a large-framed person is healthy toward the top of the BMI band, a small-framed person toward the bottom.

Is BMI affected by frame size?

Slightly — BMI does not account for skeletal build, which is one reason healthy-weight ranges span several kilograms for any height.
