hCG Doubling Time Calculator
One hCG value is a snapshot; two are a trend. Compute the doubling time clinicians actually watch in early pregnancy.
hCG doubling time measures how fast hCG is rising: (hours between tests × ln 2) ÷ ln(second ÷ first). In early pregnancy a doubling time of 48–72 hours is typical; slower rises deserve clinical follow-up. Dates are estimates — confirm timing with your provider and ultrasound where relevant.
Normal early rise: 48–72 h doubling.
Two readings, hours apart → the trend.
Slower than 72 h → discuss with a clinician.

Doubling Time
What Is hCG Doubling Time?
In the first weeks of pregnancy hCG roughly doubles every 48–72 hours — the rhythm clinicians use to judge whether an early pregnancy is progressing normally.
Because single values overlap enormously between weeks, the trend between two readings is the meaningful number, and doubling time expresses it in the units that matter.
How It Is Calculated
Doubling time = hours × ln(2) ÷ ln(hCG₂ ÷ hCG₁)
Example: Example: 120 → 300 mIU/mL over 48 h → doubling time ≈ 36.3 h (fast, typical range)
Doubling-time interpretation (early pregnancy)
| Doubling time | Reading |
|---|---|
| < 48 h | Fast — usually reassuring |
| 48–72 h | Typical |
| 72–96 h | Slow — discuss with provider |
| ≥ 96 h | Very slow — follow-up indicated |
Limitations
- Doubling slows naturally after ~week 7 and as levels climb.
- Ultrasound findings outweigh hCG math in every case.
- One pair of readings is not a diagnosis — trends and clinical context decide.

hCG Doubling Time FAQ
What is a normal hCG doubling time?
48–72 hours in early pregnancy. Below 48 is fast-but-usually-fine; above 96 hours warrants a provider conversation.
How do I calculate doubling time?
(hours between tests × ln 2) ÷ ln(second ÷ first) — two lab values are all you need.
Does doubling slow down?
Yes — after about week 7, and above roughly 6,000 mIU/mL, doubling naturally slows to 96+ hours.
