Where the Number Comes From

Your BMR is estimated from weight, height, age, and sex — typically with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. That number is then matched against average BMR tables by age band: if your burn matches the average of people ten years younger, your metabolic age reads ten years younger.

It is a comparison score, not a lab measurement. Body-composition scales that measure lean mass produce the most credible versions of it, because lean mass drives resting burn.

What Metabolic Age Does and Does Not Mean

A lower metabolic age generally reflects a higher metabolism relative to peers — usually more muscle, more activity, or a larger frame. That is genuinely positive for energy balance and healthy ageing.

But it is not a health age. Blood pressure, lipids, glucose, and fitness are absent from the calculation, so do not let a flattering metabolic age override real risk factors.
